Big Ten Example

The original intent of the LDAP specification was to create a lightweight version of the cumbersome X.500 standard to answer the need for central phone directories. In that vein, many academic institutions host public LDAP databases with contact information for their staff and students. In this example, you can use the LDAPHttp Gateway retrieve servlet to query databases at a few Big Ten schools.

LDAPHttp fits between you and the directory database, translating both your requests for the directory server and its responses for your browser. It may help to have a basic explanation of all the pieces and steps that are involved.
