According to Thomas Friedman, the arab people have three sources of malcontent. First, there is the anger at the United States. Second is their humiliation for falling behind the power curve of modernity. Third is frustration with their own governments. Friedman knows his subject and this perspective seems accurate to me, but the pat partitioning makes it too easy for Americans to ignore the fact that U.S. foreign policy has played a role in all three of these sources, not just the first one.
