The footage of Dennis Kucinich taking his turn at the Thresher Grounds in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa should mark the end of a campaign. He is the picture of desperation, grabbing at straws to incite the crowd, dying like a bad comic. The nadir is when his eyes lose focus and he spontaneously sings a fragment of the Star-Spangled Banner. As the camera pans the audience, faces drop to hands like a mass Excedrin moment.

The camera is merciless as it follows Kucinich through the crowd afterwards. He is repeatedly praised for his energy and gets a few legislation ideas, but otherwise there is no sign of hope. One man shakes his hand and tells him he's voting for somebody else. Another woman drops the hint that he should consider spending more time in Washington. Even the solitary "great speech" is prefaced with "for a little guy". I feel for him, and it is for this very reason that I hope he drops out soon.
