Without Amendment

The real partisan struggle (or lack thereof) has rarely been as apparent as I see it on this meeting of the House Ways and Means Committee, where the representatives are set to wrangle over the tax cut package submitted by the president. Democrats like Jim McDermott and Xavier Becerra submit and defend amendments to balance the tax relief extended to the wealthy equally to the working and middle classes. It's entirely futile, falling on deaf Republican majority ears. The elephants are simply too eager to court those campaign contributers of higher bracket with tax holidays, social security caps, and accelerated cuts. It's impossible to have a debate with people who don't even look up, but it's just as absurd to see them defend the indefensible: Clay Shaw talks of the slippery slope to raiding social security trust funds as if there was any more slipping to be done after the past two decades have put us at the bottom of that hill with nothing but an IOU to show the baby boomers upon their retirement. Attempts are made to circumvent the roll call, but regardless of how it's tallied each vote is determined by the Republicans as a solid block of nays. This is your democracy, America.
