most americans who have considered the matter understand and agree that the patriot act goes too far in restricting our civil liberties. however, it too did not come to being in a vacuum. the horror inflicted on us by 9/11 naturally made us generally more willing to sacrifice freedom to catch terrorists. as we begin to feel more secure, we will pull back from the excesses of this approach. it is the job of voters, the courts and activist organizations like the aclu and aclj to keep watch on our liberties. furthermore, maybe if left wing leaders expended more effort to demonstrate that they too are serious about protecting americans from terrorists and less effort trying to appease the leaders of european nations with a history of being absent/ineffective when fighting important wars, they could win public office and guard both national security and civil liberties.
