Food Safety: USDA Meat Inspection Authority |
| This vote was on a motion to table an amendment (Amdt. 1987) offered by Senator Ben Nelson (D-Nebraska), which was designed to weaken an amendment offered by Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) to the FY 2002 Agriculture Appropriations Bill. Harkins amendment would have strengthened USDA's ability to enforce standards to reduce dangerous bacteria and viruses in meat and poultry. Tabling the Nelson amendment would have cleared the way for a vote on the Harkin amendment. Failed 45 Yea to 50 Nay. |
